Underboss, sent to the post a short priced favourite in the maiden mile at Newcastle on Tuesday, courtesy of a couple of recent placings in strong maidens, jumped ok from the barriers before quickly mustering speed to travel in 3rd position with cover. Soon after, his rider Tommy Berry elected to make a quick move at about the 1300m mark to join the leader which saw Underboss sharing the lead, before Tommy was eventually able to ease him back to track the leader in 2nd spot.
Improving to hit the front on straightening, the lightly raced 3yo did seem to get a little lost out on his own drifting out to the middle of the track but once challenged in earnest by the 2nd horse, Underboss dug very deep to fight on strongly at his first try over the mile journey to win by a head.
Very exciting to win for Heart Thoroughbreds which is a syndication company that has only recently joined Kim Waugh Racing, so let’s hope there are many more winners to come!
Congratulations to all the owners and well done to all the team!
